Each month students are expected to read a book and answer a few questions about their book. Reading has a direct relationship with academic success (vocabulary, comprehension, and writing), but it also improves our social and emotional skills. The only stipulation I have is that students read a different genre each month. I have attached the genre list. Please encourage your students to stay on top of this assignment. If they are reading a little everyday like they should, this will not be a difficult assignment.
If a Graphic Novel is read it must be approved by me to count as anything other than the Free Choice. There are some really good ones out there, but Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries and others like those will only count as a Free Choice. Students need to push themselves and be able to read other things.
This will be a test grade each month!
I have many books in my classroom library for them to choose from or they can also check out books from the middle school library.
- Fantasy
- Historical Fiction
- Science Fiction
- Realistic Fiction
- Non Fiction
- Book and Movie (Read the book then watch the movie to analyze the differences)
- Fiction/Non-Fiction (Read a Fiction book, then a non-fiction that is the same subject or comparable in some way ex: read a book set on the Titanic and then a non-fiction book about the Titanic)
- Challenge (A difficult book in some way to the student)
- Free choice (Can be anything)
