Beginning of the Year

We’ve  made it through our first week of 7th grade and are beginning to get into a rhythm! Students went to the library this week and should have a book with them at all times to read.

We began learning about characteristics of a good reader this week and will continue that next week. Students will practice the characteristics as well. It is so important that students understand that reading is not just about recalling words, but THINKING about what they are reading.

After next week, I will begin sending home articles of the week for students to practice. I would love for these to be done as a family and talk about what you/they are reading. More details for this will be coming.

Anytime you read something, please share that with your student! Whether that’s a recipe, a news article, building instructions, loan documents, comic book, or your favorite novel. Let your children see you read. I want them to realize it’s more than just for school.

Supplies

Please make sure your child has a composition book for my class and scissors. I still have a few that don’t have their composition books yet and they need these by Monday. Also, we cut lots of things to put into our notebooks, so it is very helpful if they have scissors with them.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Welcome to 7th grade Reading

It’s been a fun summer, but I am so excited to get this year kicked off! We are going to be doing a lot of reading this year and working on thinking deeper. This is my 1st year teaching at White Oak and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be home! I went K-12 here and walked these very halls as a middle school student. After experiencing other districts, I can honestly  say that WO is the best school around.

My goal is to create an environment that fosters communication, collaboration and critical thinking. I hope students enjoy coming to my class, but it’s not going to be easy! I believe ALL students can learn if they put forth the effort. I want to push everyone to their next level (whatever level that may be for each student).

I look forward to a great year and working with all these Roughnecks!
